Canada Five Cents (tombac), 1943

*** During the Second World War, Canadian nickel was in great demand as a war material. This forced the temporary abandonment of its use in the coining of five-cent pieces. The first substitute material employed was a type of brass, called tombac. To aid in distinguishing them from the bronze one-cent coins, the new yellow five-cent pieces were given a dodecagonal or 12-sided, shape. The new coins, designed by Thomas Shingles, the Chief Engraver at the Royal Canadian Mint, were introduced in 1943.

*** The World War Two Propaganda Coin
This original Victory Nickel was first struck in 1943 during the Second World War by the Canadians as a piece of pure propaganda.

A Flaming Torch and “V” for Victory dominates the design, whilst the Morse code message on the coin’s rim reads “We win when we work willingly”.

If you look closely at the photo on the left you will see the Morse code message just inside the bead of the coin on the reverse.

The coin was in fact the only coin in the Commonwealth whose design reflected the fact that the nation was at war. Used by service men and women, as well as those at home, it reminded people of the war effort.
