Following Claudius' invasion the Romans quickly spread across Southern England and Wales, but the North of England proved more difficult to subjugate, Hadrian came to Britain in AD 122, determined to halt the raids from the North, and in AD 122-138 built Hadrian's Wall from the Tyne to the Solway.
The coin shown commemorates Hadrian's visit to Britain and on the reverse depicts BRITANNIA with her foot resting on a pile of stones, assumed to symbolise Hadrian's Wall.
