Although Julius Caesar invaded Britain in 55 BC and 54 BC, the first Roman Emperor to effectively conquer Britain was Claudius. Despite his physical weakness he personally led the Roman forces which defeated the British in 43 AD, and established the Roman's 400 year domination of Britain.
Claudius struck several gold and silver coins to celebrate his victory. This coin features a triumphal arch erected in Rome to commemorate his conquest and is inscribed DE BRITANN. The arch is surmounted by a horseman and armor.
