By around 775 AD Britain had settled into fragmented rule under the ancient kingdoms of Northumbria, Mercia, East Anglia, Wessex and Kent, the most famous king being OFFA of Mercia who built OFFA'S DYKE as protection against the Welsh. The coin shown is a silver penny of King Offa, with runic lettering on the reverse, and is similar in design to the first English penny (the name derived from the Roman Denarius) which was minted in 765 AD by King Haebert of Kent.
