The Danish Invasion - 'Danegeld'

During the 10th century, raids by Danish pirates became increasingly common, culminating in full scale invasions by King Sven against AETHELRED II (Aethelred the Unready 979-1016). King Sven established his son Cnute as King of England (1017-1035).
The coin shown is a 'Long-Cross' penny of Aethelred. The cross design on the reverse enabled the coin to be cut easily into half (half-pennies) or quarters. More of these coins are found in Scandinavia than in England, reflecting the enormous amount of money that was paid to the marauding Danes ('Danegeld') to buy them off.
