From 300 AD the Roman Empire suffered increasing Barbarian attacks and so in AD 410 the Roman legions finally left Britain. Civilization rapidly disintegrated under attacks from the Angles, Saxons and Jutes and Britain descended into the Dark Ages.
The coins of this time known as 'Sceats' reflect the return to a more primitive society and show various strange animal forms with the Runic alphabet and debased Roman symbols. The coin shown has a bust with a cross on the obverse, and a wolf on the reverse.
